Which timber?
Radiata, hardwood, composite
Radiata pine is the most commonly used timber in decking and fencing, and the cheapest option available. Correctly maintained it is durable and will last 20 years or more. It can be vulnerable to damage in heavy use and is prone to swelling and shrinking, so gaps appear and close up again.
Hardwood timbers like Kwila, Vitex or Garapa are extremely durable and hard wearing, lasting 25 years or more. They look great cleaned and oiled periodically, and untreated they take on a nice grey appearance over time. No nasty chemicals are used for preservation. Expect roughly twice the cost of pine.
Composite decking is made of 50% recycled plastic and 50% recycled timber. The more expensive product can be very durable; cheaper versions will crack under our harsh sun. Because of the plastics they get very hot in summer. Lowest maintenance requirements, highest price.
Costs. Price depends on material, size, height (over 1 m adds stairs and balustrades; over 1.5 m adds building consent), site conditions and design. Average square metre price for decking is around $450.
